Ethereum Q&A: ICOs and financial regulation [TIOM2-21] 21.12.2017, 22:21
Ethereum Q&A: ICOs and financial regulation [TIOM2-21]

Are ICOs disruptive, democratic venture capital? Or bubbles fueling greed? Obviously, both. We're re-defining entrepreneurial capitalism, corporations, securities, fundraising, stock markets - everything financial and the regulatory system around it. There is a certain contingent that is looking at ICOs and revealing their very statist, traditional ideas. The SEC, securities law, and restrictions on initial public offerings came out of an initial environment that was a crazy bubble, but that kind of regulation is the old way of dealing with things. This ICO bubble will have negative consequences and people will malinvest. It's still created an opportunity to do something never done before: bridge the big gap between early-stage organic financing and stock market public offerings, for companies to fundraise from a completely globalised audience. What can we do with programmable money that's decentralised, re-imagines funding and escrow structures, with protections driven by crowdsourcing? If the crowd is funding, the crowd should be vetting. Banking is not the primary incumbent being disrupted, it is regulators and the institutional, centralised regulatory environment as well. In the meantime, I will not be investing in 99.999% of these ICOs because I don't invest in minimally viable whitepapers.

This is part of a talk which took place on June 6th 2017 at a joint meet-up with Blockchain Professionals, BitcoinSYD and SydEthereum in Sydney, Australia: https://antonopoulos.com/event/blockchain-professionals-sydney/

RELATED:
Initial coin offerings (ICOs) - https://youtu.be/Q5R8KuxV4A0
The token ICO explosion - https://youtu.be/vdaW8NtJXuQ
Altcoins and the scaling debate - https://youtu.be/slbpdW-H3yk
Irreversibility and consumer protection - https://youtu.be/R107YWu5XzU
TheDao: Why failure is necessary for learning - https://youtu.be/2KZTx8IYc9s
Programmable Money, Smart Contracts and DAOs - https://youtu.be/_0jxX84mzts
The Killer App: Engineering the Properties of Money - https://youtu.be/MxIrc1rxhyI
Blockchain vs. Bullshit: Thoughts on the Future of Money - https://archive.org/details/TheInternetOfMoney-Volume2/2-03-BlockchainVsBullshit_ThoughtsOnTheFutureOfMoney.mp3
Bitcoin, Payment Security, and Consumer Protection - https://youtu.be/qMkGfB8X58o
The separation of money and state - https://archive.org/details/TheInternetOfMoney-Volume2/2-18-BitcoinQA_SeparationOfMoneyAndState.mp3
How to get people to care about security - https://youtu.be/Ji1lS9NMz1E

ABOUT
Andreas M. Bitcoin Q&A: Separation of money and state [TIOM2-18] 21.12.2017, 22:18
Bitcoin Q&A: Separation of money and state [TIOM2-18]

Will criminal elements leverage cryptocurrencies? Criminal organizations as early adopters of technology, operating at the nexus of highest risk and highest reward. Money, by definition, is something you can use to buy anything. The more restrictions it comes with, the more it loses the fundamental principle of medium of exchange. I bet it's a lot easier to buy drugs with the New Zealand dollar than it is with bitcoin. Criminals will use money, but what we need to understand is that the tool is not the crime and has never been the crime. 99% of humanity is going to use money and other tools to feed our children, give them healthcare, education, and a better future. I'm not concerned with solving crime through attempting to control money. The organization you give the absolute power over money to, will become the criminal and punish not other criminals but their political opponents. We need to start thinking about separation of money and state, and understand that it just as important as the separation of church and state.

This is part of a talk which took place on May 8th 2017 at The Blockchain.NZ Conference in Auckland, New Zealand: https://antonopoulos.com/event/the-blockchain-new-zealand-conference/

RELATED:
Beyond National Money - Zurich March 2016 - https://youtu.be/V_RS9Lh_rBY
The oxymoron of national blockchains - https://youtu.be/qSIBFBq9tRs
A voluntary alternative to mandatory currencies - https://youtu.be/5ogv3Eya9nQ
Can cryptocurrencies support terrorism? - https://youtu.be/Ryz-pXbsojU
Why we should resist financial surveillance - https://youtu.be/KBFedmrDTQw
Bitcoin and Blockchain in Norway - https://youtu.be/5ODDCx6VL2Y
The Stories We Tell About Money - https://youtu.be/ONvg9SbauMg
Fake News, Fake Money - https://archive.org/details/TheInternetOfMoney-Volume2/2-04-FakeNewsFakeMoney.mp3
Blockchain vs. Bullshit: Thoughts on the Future of Money -https://archive.org/details/TheInternetOfMoney-Volume2/2-03-BlockchainVsBullshit_ThoughtsOnTheFutureOfMoney.mp3
Bitcoin and the Banks - Five Stages of Grief - https://youtu.be/43Ucj6_Erb0
How do banks react to Bitcoin? Bitcoin Q&A: How much bitcoin do you have? [TIOM2-16] 21.12.2017, 22:16
Bitcoin Q&A: How much bitcoin do you have? [TIOM2-16]

How much bitcoin do you have? What percentage of our wealth should be in bitcoins? A percentage that reflects your understanding of how the technology works and your ability to absorb the risk that it entails. However it also depends on what country you're in, because the volatility and risk in bitcoin may be better than your national currency. This is not a recommendation to invest; I have dedicated to career and my passion, I could lose all of it and still have everything else. How does this compare to certainty and predictability within traditional financial institutions, such as interest rate changes? Bitcoin Q&A: Who determines the value of bitcoin? [TIOM2-13] 21.12.2017, 22:13
Bitcoin Q&A: Who determines the value of bitcoin? [TIOM2-13]

Keywords/phrases: Who determines the value of bitcoins? Everyone, through market forces of supply and demand in international liquid markets that operate around-the-clock. A fundamental difference between bitcoin and the USD/GBP/Euro etc. is that trading never ceases; it has been continuous for 7 years. The volatility can be a roller coaster, yet if you look at the long-term trend, volume and transactions go up while volatility keeps dropping. For Argentinians and Brazilians, the price of bitcoin is not too volatile and you don't need to sell it to them, because they already understand the separation between state and money is a good idea. Volatility is relative.

ABOUT
Andreas M. Ethereum, ICOs, and Rocket Science [TIOM2-12] 21.12.2017, 22:12
Ethereum, ICOs, and Rocket Science [TIOM2-12]

In this talk, Andreas ponders the concept of "killer apps" within the constraints and capabilities of blockchain ecosystems, and what the essence of Ethereum is. He also examines the recent influx of money sharks and ICO hype, and what happens when we're too excited to resist the siren song of riches and pass an engine test before aiming for the big boom of a moon orbit. A rocket is what happens when you do governance on explosives, and great power requires even greater responsibility.

This talk took place on March 15th 2017 during the Cape Town Ethereum meetup at the Deloitte Greenhouse in Cape Town, South Africa: https://antonopoulos.com/event/cape-town-ethereum-meetup/

RELATED:
The Lion and the Shark: Divergent Evolution in Cryptocurrency - https://archive.org/details/TheInternetOfMoney-Volume2/2-11-TheLionAndTheShark_DivergentEvolutionInCryptocurrency.mp3
The Killer App: Engineering the Properties of Money - https://youtu.be/MxIrc1rxhyI
ICOs and financial regulation - https://youtu.be/Plu_WX3Gs8E
Governance trade-offs in decentralised systems - https://youtu.be/dtwaW79Fj7c
TheDAO - Why failure is a necessity for learning - https://youtu.be/2KZTx8IYc9s
Initial coin offerings (ICOs) - https://youtu.be/Q5R8KuxV4A0
The token ICO explosion - https://youtu.be/vdaW8NtJXuQ
Altcoins and the scaling debate - https://youtu.be/slbpdW-H3yk
The Scaling Rites of Passage - https://youtu.be/rZi86_ovB3Y

ABOUT
Andreas M.
